In God’s Word, God’s people are called His sons and daughters (John 1:12). The church is also described as the body (1 Corinthians 12:12-30, Romans 12:4-5) and the household of God (Ephesians 2:19). The church is a family. God saved us into relationship with one another—He made the church this way, He wants it this way, He uses it this way, and He loves it this way. This is the identity of the church – we are a family and we work best when we gather as one.

This is the identity of the church – we are a family and we work best when we gather as one.

However, sometimes things about church become more important, than worshipping God. We place primary importance on the building, the sound, the lights, the visuals, the aesthetics, the environment, even ministries. These are all good things but they are secondary to the church worshipping God together.

This is why we are beginning Portico Unplugged.  On occasion, Portico will hold a more simplified gathering on Sunday that gets us back to the core of what it means to worship God together as His people.  So what will it look like?  It will be everyone in service together, up front and sitting with one another – families, kids, community groups, everyone together. Ministries and production will be minimal.  The sound production will be reduced with our worship team playing in front of the stage, we will have bulletins instead of slides on a screen, and we will not have children’s ministry. Liturgy will be a bit different.  There will be specific opportunities to actively participate in the service and the service itself will be shorter.

However, sometimes things about church become more important, than worshipping God.

Our hope is that this will give a renewed and fresh excitement for the family gathering together for Sunday morning worship and will allow us to treasure the presence of God and value Him above everything else.

Here are some things to consider for this upcoming Family Worship service:

Pray.  Take some time during your commute to church to pray.  Pray for the pastors and leaders as well as all the people that will be coming that day.  Ask God to unite us together as a family and help us grow in our worship of Him.

Get Ready.  There will be plenty of things that will be different at this service, some you may like and some you may not.  Be ready for some changes but be ready to dive in and be a part of it.  Get there early so that you are able to connect with others, find a seat, and prepare your heart and mind to receive from God.

Be the Family.  Look for areas to actively participate in service.  Meet new people.  Sit together and up front with your family and kids or with your Community Group. Help in an area where you see a need.  Hold someone’s kids, if you don’t have kids yourself. Encourage one another.  Pray with those who you know have needs or are struggling.

We really believe that this will be both formative and fun for our church.  It will help us center on Jesus as the most important aspect of gathering together on Sunday and it will give us perspective and opportunity to be the family that God has made us to be.  We are excited for you to join is for Portico Unplugged this week, July 17th!
