Covenant Membership

The Gospel that reconciles us to God also reconciles us to one another. Membership recognizes that our commitment to follow Jesus is also a commitment to a local church family.

At Portico we encourage becoming a Covenant Member because we believe that is fosters Christian discipleship and best reflects the membership we share in the Body of Christ. Membership is also committing to a spiritual family that provides encouragement and support. Covenant Members at Portico are called to the biblical responsibility and joy to serve and sacrifice for their brothers and sisters. This means transitioning from being a consumer to becoming a provider of God’s love and care to others. Our elders and leaders also pledge to assist our members with care, counsel, prayer and teaching.

Membership Covenant of Portico Church

Path to Membership

We recognize that the process of deciding to become a member of a local church is serious. Our path to membership at Portico has three steps. While we encourage you to complete all three steps, Foundations is intended to be a pathway to membership as well as an introduction to all who are interested in learning more about the church. The three steps towards membership at Portico are listed below:

Step 1: Attend a Foundations Session

Foundations sessions are held peridoically throughout the year. They consist of an informal meal shared together as well as a more formal classroom session. Please see below for a more detailed description of a Foundations session and what it entails. If you are interested in attending a Foundations session, please fill out this form or email Starr Parnell, sparnell@porticoarlington.org.

Step 2: Meet with a Pastor

After you have completed Foundations, you can schedule a one-on-one meeting with one of the pastors. This is simply a time for us to get to know you and hear more about your understanding of the gospel and experience of coming to know and follow the Lord. It is also a time for us to be able to walk through our membership covenant with you and answer any questions you may have about the church or what it means to follow God.

Step 3: Affirm the Membership Covenant

The final step in becoming a Covenent Member of Portico is affirming our membership covenant. This represents your commitment to living out the Christian faith in community with others at Portico, and your investment in the life of our church.

Once this entire process is complete, your membership will be confirmed by the Elders of Portico, and you will be introduced and welcomed into the church family at Portico on a Sunday morning!

Foundations

Portico’s path to membership starts with a Foundations session. Anyone interested in becoming a Covenant Member begins by walking with us through our theology, core values and beliefs. Foundations is an introduction to our community and to what it means to be a member on mission with us.

Foundations takes place over two days, beginning with a Friday evening session over dinner at the home of Lead Pastor Jason Conner. The evening will be an opportunity to engage with others and hear from our leaders about the vision, values, and mission of our church.

The Saturday session is held at the Portico Church office. The pastors and leaders of Portico will dive deeper into the Gospel and our theology, unpacking the Portico mission statement of Know Christ, Build the Church, Tell the Story.

Topics covered in the Saturday session include:

Person of God: Theology, beliefs and overview of the Gospel.

People of God: Membership, community, service, and gifts.

Presence of God: Local and global outreach.
