Here's a little more about our trip...

BETHEL GOSPEL
In 2012, Portico Church Arlington began praying for an international ministry partner. After a season of prayer and exploration, it was clear that the Lord was leading us to Bethel Gospel Church. Bethel is a church located in Hyderabad, India a city of 9 million people in the Telangana region. Bethel is led by Pastor Kanukolanu Sudhakar, who has been in local ministry for over 30 years. During that time, Bethel has planted over 120 churches in urban and rural contexts impacting the lives of countless Indians. Bethel Gospel Church belongs to the Acts 29 church planting network.

ORPHAN OUTREACH
A major part of Bethel Gospel Church’s mission is caring for the orphans in the communities where they plant churches. This involves housing them, providing resources for education, health care, and recreation. Bethel Gospel Church cares for an average of 200 orphans at present. Once a year, Bethel Gospel Church organizes an event called Christmas Carnival where they bring together all the orphans from their various sites to spend time together, play games, learn about the Gospel and other life skills. At the same time, caregivers are trained in the bible, orphan care and given respite.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Our time at Bethel Gospel Church is focused on building relationships, ministering to the staff and children there, and participating in Christmas Carnival. This trip is not focused on evangelism or poverty-alleviation efforts. The majority of our time will be spent interacting with children ages 2-20 years old. Christmas Carnival functions much like a VBS and the Portico Team is expected to lead sessions in worship, teaching, crafts, games, and devotionals for the adult caretakers. You will be asked to lead at least one session with a partner, although you can indicate your preferences. You will need to be flexible, culturally sensitive, and willing to forgo many of the comforts of home. Expect to be challenged, encouraged, and to have a lot of fun!

Open to Talk provides a warm and open space to discuss the big questions of life, and to explore the person at the heart of Christianity—Jesus Christ. It is designed for those who don't identify with the Christian faith and are open to learning more.

Dinner will be provided, each session will include a short talk, followed by peer-led discussion groups created to foster open dialogue, in which participants discuss the topic at hand, ask any question, or merely sit and listen.

Foundations | 05.18.18 - 05.19.18

About:

FOUNDATIONS is an introduction to the community, theology, and values of Portico Church Arlington. It’s a snapshot of what it means to be a member on mission with us. If you are new, FOUNDATIONS is a great place to connect with others.

Details:

How it works…FOUNDATIONS will take place over two days, beginning with a Friday evening session over dinner from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The evening will be an opportunity to engage with others over good food and hear from our leaders about the vision, values, and mission of our church.

The Saturday session will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Portico Church Office in Clarendon (3240 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 200, Arlington, VA, 22201). The pastors and leaders of Portico will teach on how we live out the three identities we embody as disciples of Jesus: Worshippers, Family, and Missionaries. Attending both sessions serves as our pathway to membership. The Saturday session will include:

  • belonging to God: theology, beliefs and overview of the Gospel
  • belonging to each other: membership, community, service, and gifts
  • belonging on mission: local and global outreach

There will also be plenty of time for discussion.

For the Saturday session, a cost of $10 (per person) is required for materials.

If you would like to attend the Friday session or both, please SIGN UP HERE. Space is limited so register soon!

Please contact Pastor Nate Wagner with any additional questions.
